Make #NotWasting a way of life

Today, almost a billion people go hungry while up to one third of food for human consumption is spoiled or wasted. This is the equivalent of 1.3 billion tonnes of edible food.
To raise awareness about food waste, UNEP, FAO, WFP, the Zero Hunger Challenge, Food Tank, and the US Mission to the UN in Rome have joined to show that cutting food waste reduces poverty and hunger and ﬁghts climate change. The #NotWasting Food campaign on the social media highlights the impacts of food waste and promotes Sustainable Development Goal 12: to ensure sustainable consumption and production patterns.
Join the #Notwasting Food campaign on the social media and make #NotWasting your way of life. Here are a few ways to get you started:
- The 'Best Before date' doesn't mean' Throw Away After’, however the product quality might be inferior
- Shop and buy locally to keep food from travelling unnecessary miles
- Buy ‘ugly’ fruit and vegetables. 44% of global food loss and waste is made of fruits and vegetables. Ugly food tastes just as good as the beautiful!
Some key facts and figures (UNFAO)
- The food currently wasted in Europe could feed 200 million people.
- Food wastage's carbon footprint is estimated at 3.3 billion tonnes of CO2 equivalent of GHG released into the atmosphere per year.
- 1.4 billion hectares of land - 28 percent of the world's agricultural area - is used annually to produce food that is lost or wasted.
