Central African Republic

The Central African Republic is one of the poorest countries in the world, with a Human Development Index which places it in 185th place out of 187 countries (UNDP, 2013). The main livelihoods in the country are food agriculture (cassava, corn, groundnuts, sorghum and millet), cash crops (coffee, citrus fruit, cotton), livestock breeding, mining (diamonds and gold), hunting, fishing and/or gathering.

The last IPC analysis for November 2014 to March 2015 shows that the food security situation has deteriorated following recrudescence of the conflict since December 2013. Key trends are the following:

  • Livelihood change, particularly livestock and food production are affected by the crisis.
  • An estimated 1.5 million people are in humanitarian phase (phase 3 Crisis and phase 4 Emergency) of which 1.3 million from the rural areas (32%) and 209,978 in Bangui (25%).
  • Life-saving assistance and emergency livelihood support in the coming months will be key to support the most vulnerable households towards the lean season that in 2015 is expected to start in March, earlier than usual.
